The Altevogt Family

ALTEVOGT Family Genealogy

WELCOME TO THE ALTEVOGT FAMILY GENEALOGY WEBSITE

Hello! My name is Terry Dunn. Email me at tldunn53@yahoo.comMy cousin, Barb Hays Clayton and I are developing this website in the hopes of meeting other Altevogt descendants and learning more of our Altevogt ancestry. My greatgrandmother was Maria Luise Elisabeth Altevogt. She was born in 1852 in the Ladbergen Germany area. In 1860 she immigrated with her family to the United States and married Bernard Gottlob in Alton, Illinois in 1870. She died in Madison County, Illinois in 1909. Her older brother Ernest Henry Ludewig "Louis" Altevogt (Barb's ancestor) married Anna Heidemann and the two lived much of their lives in Montgomery County, Illinois. Not much was known about their ancestry until recently. The name of their father for example was only confirmed during January 2001. Thanks to the help of a couple of very kind and generous individuals (John Clausing and Bill Roege of the Ladbergen list), who checked German church records in and around Ladbergen, much knowledge has been added in a very short time. It is result of the enthusiasm generated by the recent findings, that I decided to start this website. There are not many individuals with the Altevogt surname living in the United States. I suspect that there are, however many Altevogt descendants. Hopefully this site can be a vehicle for adding to the extant Altevogt information base.

JOHAN FRIEDRICH ADOLPH ALTEVOGT: EARLIEST CONFIRMED ALTEVOGT ANCESTOR

On 19 Apr 1807 Johan Friedrich Altevoght, single and a Heuerling in Wester (a
section of Ladbergen) stemming "aus Lienen" married Anne Christine Elisabeth
Brockriede a "gutsherrlich Jungfrau aus Wester" (a virgin of Wester) according to Ladbergen records.
Friedrich's cause of death was listed as "Schwindsucht," which literally is a wasting
away, therefore consumption or TB or the like. This was a very commonly
listed cause of death and appears to be a generic, rather than specific reference.

THE IMMIGRANT: HEINRICH WILHELM ALTEVOGT

Heinrich's father Friedrich and the the neighbors Johan Herman Kotterhenrich and
Johan Wilhelm Eschman signed the declaration of registration of Heinrich's birth in Ladbergen. Heinrich and family continued to live in or near the city of Ladbergen, (which lies in the state of Westfalen, Germany) until their immigration. At the birth of Arend Wilhelm Adolph, Heinrich and family were living "whohnheft bei seine mutter wittwe Altevogt im Felde" (in a dwelling by his mother, widow Altevogt in Felde). Heinrich immigrated with his family to the United States in 1860. Heinrich, his wife Maria, and children Ludwig, Catharine, Maria Louisa, Christine, Gesine, and Fredericke sailed from Bremerhaven on the ship Ocean arriving in Baltimore, MD on 16 May 1860. On some of his children's birth records, Heinrich is listed as a Neubauer or "new
farmer", the technical term for a person who created a new farm out of
previously uncultivated land -- the term may carry over more than one generation,
however. Heinrich was listed as a viktualienhandler (grocer or more likely a farmer) in the book called Auswanderer der Gemeinde 1830-1930 compiled by Hans Berleman in 1995 . Probable additional children Rudolph and Wilhelm who resided in Southern Illinois. (William in Staunton) have not been positively confirmed.
